DIY dresser turned bench | HometalkMart 20, 2021
When I picked up this chest, I didn’t realize it was in as bad shape as it was until I brought it home. After assessing the damage, I scratched my head. The top 2 drawers were missing, the second drawer below was missing from the bottom and one of the sides, and the bottom drawer also needed a new bottom. It was missing a steering wheel and the convertible top … well, it was just plain nasty.
But the frame of this chest was in great shape, not to mention that it is made of oak. So instead of throwing it away, I used it again!
First I peeled off the top. Once the top was removed, I pulled out the top drawer divider and slide and removed the second drawer. Leave the 2nd drawer slide, the bench will go there.
After pulling the dresser out to the last drawer, I turned the old top over, cut it to size, and used it for the bench. Once your seat is clear, use wooden spatula, I like Elmer’s Wood Fill, and fill in all of those holes and cracks. Once your wood filling is dry, use a 150 grit sandpaper and sand the entire dresser until it is smooth. ….. To see the finishing touches please visit my blog!
And here is the last piece. A beautiful original bench with a working drawer!
